The Department of Nuclear Engineering at Seoul National University is training talented individuals who will lead the way in “future nuclear energy technologies to realize the dream of human happiness,” including the development of new reactors, offshore nuclear power plants, space exploration propulsion systems, nuclear fusion energy technologies, radiation engineering technologies, and advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In particular, many excellent researchers are working hard to develop nuclear energy technologies that can give the public peace of mind, such as developing clean future energy technologies, managing spent nuclear fuel, and improving the safety of operating nuclear power plants. They are also researching future nuclear energy applications that can greatly contribute to improving the quality of life across the medical and industrial sectors. In addition to its pivotal role in research and talent development, the organization has also been active in promoting technology transfer to industry and educating the public about nuclear energy through the establishment of the Nuclear Policy Center and the Nuclear Future Technology and Policy Research Institute, and has led the Million Signatures Against Nuclear Power campaign. It also serves as a think tank for research on nuclear energy, nuclear security, and nuclear non-proliferation policies.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the relocation of the Department of Nuclear Engineering to the Gwanak Campus of Seoul National University, the department is preparing for the next 50 years by pooling its resources. It is preparing to rebuild the department building, which will become a cradle for future nuclear energy talents in Korea and a center for future nuclear energy technologies, and is planning various activities and projects that will present a vision for the future of nuclear energy technologies. To raise the necessary funds, the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Seoul National University is raising funds for the Future Development Fund.
